Golfe du Morbihan

The people of Brittany love for sailing

Brittany has coastline to the north west and south, many islands not far from these coastlines with wild winds, rugged cliffs and some great clifftop walking. To the south is the Morbihan gulf, 35 square kilometres of inland waters, 42 islands, oyster farms, fishing and pleasure boats. Brittany is a fabulous focal point for sailors with many international sailing regattas departing from its shores.

Boat trips

One of the most popular activities on our Brittany tours, is a trip in a boat somewhere. For a boat ride to the islands off north Brittany the weather is not alway condusive to being on the water, as strong winds and high waves are quite a regular feature. However, it is more likely to happen if a boat trip on the Morbihan Gulf is planned. This is a great way to see the oyster beds (when the tide is lower) and to experience the enormous surges of tides which occur every day. Small villages, sailing boats, fishing boats and numerous islands are a part of this wonderful journey. A special treat is a longer boat cruise which goes around the island where there is a circle of old menhirs (standing stones) from ancient times, with one half of them appearing from under the water.

Fresh seafood

All around the miles of south, west and northern coastlines, you will find harbours and boats of every sort. Travellers to Brittany should definitely try the wonderful fresh seafood served at almost every restaurant, bistro and cafe near the waterfront.
