Umbria invites you to experience its stunning nature, remarkable culture, and unique landscapes. Explore solitary oak forests, rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. Along the way, you'll encounter hermitages and monasteries, impressive churches adorned with masterful frescoes and art treasures, and historic buildings. The hikes offer scenic high-altitude trails, shady forest paths, and charming villages. Castles and fortresses stand out atop the hilltops. Food lovers will delight as well: the area around Lake Trasimeno is known for its fine red wine, Trevi produces excellent olive oil, and Spoleto is renowned for its world-class truffles. The high trail around Lake Trasimeno promises sunny hiking with stunning lake views. The Via Francigena will guide you south, passing through Assisi, a major pilgrimage center, and leading to the Spoleto Bridge, which Goethe once crossed on his travels.
You’ll hike on well-maintained paths and trails. The daily routes traverse high plateaus, gravel roads, and expansive forests. A good level of fitness and some sure-footedness are necessary. With hiking times of up to 5 hours, you'll have ample opportunity to leisurely enjoy the cultural highlights of the towns along the way.

Arrival in Passignano sul Trasimeno
On your first evening, take a charming stroll through the historic heart of Passignano sul Trasimeno. From the elegant vantage point at the Rocca, gaze out from the grand bell tower and soak in the breathtaking views of the shimmering lake below.
Circular walk in Passignano – “Giro del Trasimeno” Details: approx. 4.5 to 5 hours | 15 km | 500 m 500 m
The long-distance trail Giro del Trasimeno takes you over numerous hilltops high above the valley, where you'll enjoy spectacular views of the shimmering lake. In Magione, marvel at the impressive Maltese Castle, which served as a refuge for pilgrims on the Via Francigena during the Middle Ages. A scenic train ride along the lake will bring you back to Passignano.
Passignano sul Trasimeno – Assisi “Green Path and Sacred Forest” Details: approx. 4 hours | 12 km | 350 m 100 m
Travel by train past Perugia to Bastia Umbra, where you'll begin your hike on the “Green Path,” the Percorso Verde, along the Tescio River. Far above you lies the majestic city of Assisi, a destination for countless pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Saint Francis. At the old mill, you'll enter the Sacred Forest, where a detour to the Third Paradise—a stunning artwork crafted from over 120 olive trees—is a must-see. Your journey then leads you up to the grand religious monuments, culminating at the impressive Basilica of San Francesco.
Assisi – Spello/Foligno “Monte Subasio High Trail” Details: approx. 5 hours | 16 km | 800 m 950 m
Today’s hike offers perhaps the most breathtaking section of the Franciscan Trail, traversing the slopes of the 1,290-meter-tall Monte Subasio. Enjoy the lush, grassy ridges, ancient forest-like woodlands, and sweeping views that make this a truly delightful trekking experience. Soon, you'll reach the enchanting town of Spello, renowned for its numerous churches and chapels adorned with magnificent Renaissance frescoes by the greatest painters. From there, take the train to Foligno, a historic city located directly on the ancient Roman road, Via Flaminia.
Spello/Foligno – Trevi “Franciscan Trail” Details: approx. 4 hours | 12 km | 350 m 150 m
Leaving Foligno, you’ll follow the Franciscan Trail, guided by Tao symbols on colorful markers. Your path leads along the ancient Roman road, Via Flaminia, to the fortress of Sant’Eraclio. From there, the Via Francigena takes you through olive groves and gentle hills, with Trevi—officially recognized as one of Italy's most beautiful villages—waiting high above. Relax on the Piazza and explore the Villa Fabri, renowned for its magnificent ceiling fresco.
Trevi – Spoleto “Olive Groves and Castles” Details: approx. 4.5 hours | 15 km | 550 m 550 m
You’ll start through the city gate and hike up and down through olive groves, passing the Franciscan hermitage on your way to the charming Campello with its distinctive white-walled perimeter. Your journey follows the Via Francigena towards Rome, guiding you to the picturesque fortified village of Poreta. Here, a rewarding climb to the castle offers stunning views and a memorable experience. A short drive takes you to Spoleto, where you can use the unique underground escalators and lifts—a remarkable network of car-free transport systems—to reach the city center.

Spoleto, celebrated as the city of truffles, is a haven for gourmet lovers and connoisseurs of art and culture. As you hike, you'll traverse enchanting shaded paths leading to the tranquil hermitage of Saint Francis, nestled high on Monte Luco. Admire the stunning Ponte delle Torri, an architectural marvel, and stroll in the illustrious footsteps of Goethe around the Rocca, offering panoramic views over the city. Indulge in a visit to the magnificent cathedral and savor exquisite truffle delicacies sourced from the lush surrounding woodlands.
