Slow Travel Transylvania 6-Day Small Group Tour
Hidden Transylvania is a slow travel experience built around place, rhythm and human connection rather than distance or the number of sights visited. The journey is designed around a single rural base, allowing guests to slow down, settle in and discover Transylvania as it is lived – through landscapes, food, crafts and everyday village life. Instead of changing hotels each night, guests return to the same accommodation, creating continuity, comfort and a sense of belonging.
Each day follows a natural rhythm, balancing cultural landmarks with time in the countryside and moments of quiet discovery. Activities are hosted by local people in their own environments – craftsmen, hosts and villagers – sharing skills and stories that are part of everyday life rather than performances created for tourism. The result is not a checklist itinerary but a deeper encounter with the region – an encounter shaped by place, people and pace.
This experience is designed for travellers who value depth over speed and prefer a considered, unhurried way of exploring a region. It works particularly well for couples, small groups of friends and culturally curious travellers seeking authentic rural experiences. Guests who enjoy meaningful encounters, landscapes, local food and a slower rhythm of travel will find this journey especially rewarding.
The program includes village walks, cultural visits and light outdoor exploration. Distances on foot are generally short and no technical hiking or demanding physical activity is required. The pace is intentionally relaxed, with time for rest, conversation and spontaneous moments between structures activities.

Arrival – Entering Rural Transylvania
Guests arrive in Transylvania and are transferred to the guesthouse in the village of Stejărișu, set within the quiet landscapes of the Hârtibaciu Valley. After arrival, guests have time to settle into their rooms and ease into the slower rhythm of the countryside.
As the afternoon unfolds, a short introductory walk through the village offers the first encounter with rural Transylvania – traditional Saxon houses, quiet lanes and the landscapes that will shape the days ahead. Along the way, guests are introduced to the history of the region and the cultural layers that define this part of Transylvania.
In the evening, guests gather for a welcome dinner at the guesthouse, where regional dishes and local ingredients provide the first taste of the area’s culinary traditions. This relaxed evening sets the tone for the journey ahead – a slower exploration of landscapes, villages and cultural heritage rarely experienced through conventional itineraries.
Sighișoara – UNESCO Heritage & Saxon Legacy
After breakfast at the guesthouse, the day begins with a journey towards Sighișoara, one of the best-preserved medieval citadels in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with a local guide, guests explore the historic upper town, discovering the legacy of the Saxon merchants and guilds who shaped the city for centuries. The walk through the citadel includes the Clock Tower, the historic heart of the town, the Covered Scholars’ Staircase and the Church on the Hill, overlooking the medieval streets and surrounding hills.
Lunch is enjoyed in a carefully selected restaurant within the citadel. In the afternoon, the journey continues into the countryside of the Hârtibaciu Valley, where fortified churches and traditional villages reveal the rural world that once sustained the Saxon communities of the region. Guests visit the fortified church of Brădeni, where the defensive tower still preserves the remarkable community chests once used by villagers to safeguard their most valuable possessions – a fascinating glimpse into the organisation of village life. Back in Stejărișu, the village’s own fortified church offers another insight into this tradition. Known locally for its bacon tower, the church once served as a communal storage place where families kept curated meats and other provisions.
In the evening, guests gather for a Saxon-inspired dinner at the guesthouse, where regional recipes and local ingredients reflect the culinary traditions of the area. The evening unfolds in a relaxed atmosphere, offering time to share stories from the day and settle deeper into the rhythm of rural Transylvania.
Transfăgărășan & Cârța Abbey – From Dramatic Mountain Roads to Cistercian Silence
After breakfast at the guesthouse, the day turns toward the Carpathian Mountains, as the journey continues to one of the most spectacular alpine routes in Europe – the Transfăgărășan Road. Travelling by private vehicle with driver, the route gradually climbs from the rolling countryside of southern Transylvania into dramatic mountain landscapes. Along the way, several scenic stops reveal sweeping views of valleys, forests and winding mountain roads.
Lunch is enjoyed at a mountain restaurant along the route, offering a relaxed break surrounded by the high landscapes of the Carpathians. In the afternoon, the return journey includes a visit to Cârța Abbey, the evocative ruins of a former Cistercian monastery dating back to the 13th century. Set in a quiet rural landscape, the abbey offers a striking contrast between monastic silence and the dramatic scenery of the mountains earlier in the day. The journey then returns to the calm countryside of the Hârtibaciu Valley.
In the evening, guests gather at the guesthouse for a countryside grill evening. A relaxed outdoor dinner around the fire feature local meats, seasonal ingredients and regional wines – a convivial moment to share stories from the day’s mountain adventure.
Off the Beaten Path – Wild Landscapes and Unfiltered Nature
After the dramatic landscapes of the previous day, the pace slows down to explore the quieter natural environment of the Hârtibaciu Valley. Travelling along small countryside roads and slow off-road tracks, the day focuses entirely on the regions’ natural landscapes – rolling hills, forests, open meadows and remote valleys that remain far beyond the usual tourism routes. The area is known for its remarkable biodiversity, offering opportunities to observe local flora and fauna, as well as birdlife that thrives in this traditional agricultural landscape. Several stops along the route allow time for short walks, panoramic viewpoints and moments to simply experience the stillness of the countryside.
At midday, lunch is served in the middle of nature, in a carefully prepared countryside setting – an unexpected moment of comfort and elegance within the wild landscape. The afternoon continues through scenic backroads before returning to Stejărișu.
In the evening, the guesthouse hosts a local music evening, where a small group of musicians introduces traditional regional music in an intimate and relaxed setting.
Apoș – A Living Life: Craft, Community and Rural Life
The final full day of the journey focuses on everyday life and traditions in the Transylvanian countryside. After breakfast, the journey continues to the nearby village of Apoș, where guests are welcomed to Villa Abbatis Equestrian Centre, set within the rolling meadows and oak forests of Hârtibaciu Valley. The area has drawn international attention in recent years, including visits by King Charles, who has long supported the preservation of Transylvania’s rural landscapes and traditional villages. The visit begins with an introduction to the village and its efforts to revive traditional crafts and rural life. Guests explore the working blacksmith workshop, where traditional metalwork has been brought back to life after decades of disappearance. Nearby, the village also preserves a traditional ceramic kiln, still used today to fire clay using historic techniques.
At midday, guests enjoy a countryside lunch in the village, offering another opportunity to try local ingredients and regional recipes. Later in the day, guests have the opportunity to admire the landscape in a different way – on horseback. A gentle ride through the surrounding meadows offers a peaceful way to discover the beauty that defines this part of Transylvania. For guests who prefer not to ride, the time can be spent exploring the area on foot or simply enjoying the quiet atmosphere of the village. The journey then returns to Stejărișu.
In the evening, guests gather for a farewell dinner at the guesthouse, celebrating the landscapes, traditions and encounters that shaped the journey through rural Transylvania.
