Individual arrival to Flensburg

Flensburg is one of the northernmost cities in Germany, making it the ideal starting point for a cycle tour along the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Denmark. Seafaring and the rum trade once made Flensburg an important trading town. After your arrival, take a stroll through the picturesque alleyways and corners of the old town with its typical Flensburg merchants' courtyards. The historic harbor, the warehouses and the museum shipyard are certainly worth a detour.

Flensburg - Åbenrå / Rodekro, approx. 55 km

Leaving Flensburg behind you, you soon cross the border into Denmark. On quiet paths, you cycle relaxed along the Ochsenweg, a historic country lane whose origins are thought to date back to the Bronze Age. After arriving in Åbenrå, explore the old town, which is characterized by typical bourgeois and craftsmen's houses, and visit the art museum housed in Brundlund Castle.

Åbenrå - Christiansfeld, approx. 50 / 75 km

The Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Denmark takes you further north. First of all, it's worth taking a break in Haderslev. The cathedral there will immediately catch your eye. The impressive church is one of the most beautiful in Denmark. Take a boat tour on the Haderslev Dam before cycling either directly or a few kilometers further along the Little Belt to Christiansfeld. The town was created around 250 years ago on the drawing board with the aim of building the ideal town.

Christiansfeld - Middelfart, approx. 45 / 65 km

After tasting a typical Christiansfeld honey cake, you cycle to Kolding. You can already see the old royal castle Koldinghus from afar. You cycle mostly along the varied coastline on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Denmark along the Little Belt. Climb the castle's tower, the Kæmpetårn, and enjoy the wonderful view over the town and Kolding Fjord. Continue on to Middelfart. Welcome to the island of Funen!

Middelfart - Odense, approx. 55 / 65 km

Before you get on your bike, it's worth taking a boat tour. With a bit of luck, you might spot porpoises, which often frolic in the waters of the Little Belt. Heading east, the cycle path takes you through idyllic landscapes to Odense. Denmark's third largest city is the birthplace of one of the most famous Danes, the writer Hans Christian Andersen. Many places in Odense, such as the H. C. Andersen Hus, commemorate him and his world-famous fairy tales.

Odense - Svendborg / Troense, approx. 50 / 60 km

Today's stage of your cycle tour on the Baltic Sea Cycle Path in Denmark takes you to the south of Funen. It comes as no surprise that Funen is known as the Garden of Denmark, as the island is characterized by blooming gardens, fairytale castles and lush nature. On the way, it is worth making a stop at Egeskov Slot. It dates back to the 16th century and is one of the most beautiful moated castles in Europe. Continue to the cozy town of Svendborg. Take a stroll along the lively harbor and get in the mood for the excursions to the Danish South Sea.

Excursion to the island of Ærø, approx. 35 - 60 km + ferry trips

Take a relaxing ferry ride to the idyllic island of Ærø. From the enchanting Ærøskøbing, you have the opportunity to get to know the island on a shorter or longer cycle tour - whichever you prefer. Take a detour to the south-eastern tip of Ærø to Marstal with its interesting Søfartsmuseum, enjoy the view of the seemingly endless sea from the cliffs of Voderup Klint and pay a visit to the Skjoldnæs lighthouse. Before heading back to Svendborg, don't miss out on trying the Løvtens Paa'kar. The fluffy pancakes are a specialty of the island.

Excursion to the island of Skarø, approx. 5 km

From Svendborg, you travel by boat through the Danish South Sea to the island of Skarø. Only a few people live on this small island. It is characterized by an abundance of beach meadows, dunes and sandy reefs. The highest point on the island is Vesterbjerg. From here you have a beautiful view of the sea and the many species of wading birds. Skarø is also a great place to feast. Try ice cream sweetened with sugar kelp and birch sap in the island's only café, which is famous far beyond the island's borders. Take the ferry back to Svendborg.

Svendborg - Fåborg, approx. 35 km

Leaving Svendborg behind you, you cycle along quiet paths through the south of the island of Funen. Large fields and small villages accompany you not far from the coast. You spend the night in Fåborg again. Explore the town fortifications built in the Middle Ages, including the Vesterport. It is one of the few preserved city gates in Denmark. The Faaborg Museum, which presents works by Fyn painters and artists, is also worth a visit.

Fåborg - Sønderborg, approx. 45 / 35 km + ferry trip

Your journey on the Baltic Sea Cycle Route in Denmark first takes you across the Horne Land peninsula to Bøjden. From there you take the ferry to Fynshav on the island of Als. Back on your bike, you cycle across the island to Sønderborg. Visit the castle of the same name, one of the oldest royal castles in Southern Jutland. It houses a museum that looks at the history and culture of the border region.

Sønderborg - Flensburg, approx. 40 km

After you have left Sønderborg, it is worth making a detour to the Historiecenter Dybbøl Banke just a few kilometers away. It commemorates the German-Danish War, which the Danish troops lost against the Prussians in 1864. Gråsten is the perfect place for another break. This is the summer residence of the Danish royal family, including an English-style garden that is well worth seeing. Parallel to the Flensburg Fjord, you cycle mostly along the coast back to Flensburg.
