Saarburg to Koblenz 8 day Bike & Barge tour

As far as cycle touring destinations in Europe go there are few better than the Moselle and Saar River Valleys in Germany. It is a “stunning” region highlighted by an enchanting countryside, fairy tale castles, award-winning vineyards on impossibly steep slopes and historic medieval towns and villages. The Rhine’s peaceful little sisters, the Moselle and Saar Rivers, as they meander from picturesque village to village offer unsurpassed views of castles high on the hills, stone-clad fortresses, picture-perfect wineries and much, much more. On a day to day basis as you cycle through this magical region, you will visit culturally rich cities. Soak up the sights of untouched nature, meet local winegrowers and bottlers and importantly get the opportunity to relive the rich history of the region.

The history of the region, along the banks of the Moselle and Saar Rivers, dates back to the Roman Era, some 2,000 or so years ago. For guests on a bike and barge tour, there is much to see beautiful timbered houses from medieval times, magnificent vineyards and the Porta Nigra a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. You'll also visit a headland in Koblenz known as the “German Corner” where you'll find a statue of William l, a German emperor who was responsible for unifying Germany. The surrounding region sits at the junction of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers in Koblenz and Saarburg and is widely referred to as “Little Venice”. These are just a few of the highlights of this unforgettable trip!

The Moselle, with a length of 544 km, is the Rhine’s longest tributary and is also the second most important shipping route in Germany, while the Saar, with a length of 246 km, is the Moselle’s longest tributary.

Tour Character: Level 1 Self-guided

Most of the stretches are paved or asphalted without any gradients of note. This makes the trip suitable even for unpractised cyclist.

Accommodation:

A stylish and welcoming atmosphere awaits you on board. Elegantly furnished cabins and inviting public areas create a pleasant and relaxed setting. Spacious panoramic lounge areas with bar and restaurant add to the ship’s special charm. On the large sun deck, comfortable seating invites you to unwind while enjoying beautiful views of the passing scenery, while also providing space to store bicycles.

Cabins 56 outside cabins, comfortable and tastefully furnished, equipped with shower/WC, hairdryer, TV, individually adjustable air conditioning and safe.

Upper Deck: 23x 2-bed-cabins (approx. 11 m²) and 2 mini-suites (approx. 11 m²) with additional seating. All cabins feature french balconies (floor-to-ceiling windows that can be opened).

Main Deck: 28x 2-bed-cabins (approx. 11 m²), 2x 1-bed-cabin (approx. 11 m²), and 2 mini-suites (approx. 11 m²) with additional seating. Cabins have panoramic windows (upper section can be opened). In some cabins at the front of the ship (category Eco), engine and generator noise may be noticeable.

Included in the tour:

• 8 days/7 nights in booked cabin category with private facilities 
• Full board consisting of 7x breakfast, 6x lunch package for cycle tours or snack on board (non-cyclists), 6x coffee or tea in the afternoon, 7x 3-course-dinner

Notes:

• Upper deck cabins from 1549 EUR p.p twin or 2-bed cabins for single use on request
• Single cabins are quoted for 1-bed main deck. If none are available, a twin for single use may be offered with a supplement
• The interior of the ship is a non-smoking zone: smoking is only allowed on the sun deck. As a safety measure, a statutory smoking ban applies in all cabins, this means that all cabins and rooms on board are non-smoking areas. 
• Please indicate your body height when you book a bike so an appropriate size is given
• Languages on board: German, English 
• Excursions: we offer a small excursion program, that can be booked directly on board at the cruise director only. You will get a brief description together with your travel documents. Depending on the number of participants some excursions could be carried out in 2 languages (German/ English)
• Minimum number of participants 80
• To bring your own bike On request only–due to lack of space on sun deck
• Luggage we recommend: rainwear, bicycle helmet, sunhat and sneakers.
• Schedule and program changes:  Basically, we reserve the right to make changes of routing and program. If there is low or high water and a route cannot be shipped, the captain reserves the right to change the route in view of your safety (this cannot be accepted as a reason for free withdrawal). Same applies to previously unknown administrative orders of lock or bridge repairs.
• Travel documents EU-citizens (without special situations like dual citizenship, main residence abroad or a limited-validity passport) are required to have a valid passport or ID-card, not expiring within six (6) months of the return of your cruise. We kindly ask non-EU citizens, EU-nationals with multiple citizenship or anybody who has to respect special legal entry requirements for the country to visit, to inform about visa and entry documents at the competent embassy.
• This trip is not suitable for guests with reduced mobility 
• We recommend that you take out a travel health insurance with repatriation coverage as well as baggage, accident and travel cancellation insurance

Arrival/ Departure/ Parking:

• Transfers: Between Saarburg and Koblenz by train (in 2 hrs. for about € 25 p.p.)
• Public parking near the pier in Saarburg (unguarded, not reservable). Costs approx. € 25.-/week
• Parking space near the train station in Saarburg (unguarded, not reservable). Costs approx. € 10.- per week.
