Lake Lugano 6-Day Hiking Tour (Level 2)
The most attractive hikes in southern Ticino are to be enjoyed around the city of Lugano and its lake, with spectacular views over hills and forests to the Po Valley and the Alps that greet you at every turn. The city’s local mountains, Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, are the starting points for two wonderful leisurely hikes. On the Chestnut Trail in Alto Malcantone, you can explore the legacy of the fruit that has fed the people of Ticino for centuries and that is now one of their specialities. You will also follow old smugglers’ trails, along which coffee and tobacco were illegally brought across the border in days gone by. Gems such as Morcote, ‘Switzerland’s most beautiful village’, and Gandria with its cypresses, palm trees and olive trees never fail to charm visitors with their irresistible Mediterranean flair. Then, tuck into some steaming polenta, delicious risotto, alpine cheeses and delicious «formaggini» in shady «grotti», those traditional Ticinese taverns visitors to the region treasure.
This is a predominantly leisurely tour offering fantastic views over Lake Lugano. However, good basic fitness is required to handle the sometimes steep ascents and descents. Certain sections can be a little slippery in wet conditions. You need to be sure-footed to undertake this tour
Since 1906, the hotel has adorned the historic centre of Lugano, directly on the lake promenade. The hotel's nostalgic charm has been preserved during renovation, and the lovingly designed interior, romantic ambience and personal service ensure an unforgettable stay. Breathtaking views of the lake and mountains from the rooms add to the appeal of the entire property.

Arrival in Lugano
Trip to Monte Generoso Details: ca. 4.5 h ca. 14 km 220 m 1’350 m
Today begins with a train journey to Capolago and the cog railway up to Monte Generoso. From the top, the views of Lake Lugano, the Po Valley and the Alps are unrivalled – it’s no wonder that this spot was chosen for the unique Fiore di Pietra building, designed by Ticino’s star architect Mario Botta and housing a panoramic restaurant. The trail leads through endless forests with rustic cottages and drama- tic gorges. You’ll also encounter the old Mulino di Bruzella mill on the Breggia River. Out of action for years, the mill is now back in operation. Once you reach Morbio Superiore, you can return to Lugano by bus and train.
Alto Malcantone Chestnut Trail Circular Hike Details: ca. 3 h ca. 11 km 410 m 416 m
This enchanting circular hike along the Sentiero del Castagno trail begins in Arosio Paese – the hig- hest village in the Alto Malcantone hills. Once there, be sure not to miss the Church of San Michele’s portal, which is a magnificent work crafted from chestnut wood. Following the legacy of this noble, prickly-skinned fruit, you’ll hike along shady paths through sparse chestnut forests today. The route then takes you through the charming Ticinese villages of Mugena, Vezio and Fescoggia, before you head back to Arosio Paese.
Trip to Morocote Details: ca. 4.5 h ca. 12.4 km 774 m 796 m
Today begins with a family-favourite hike from Monte San Salvatore to Morcote. The red funicular rail- way takes you from Lugano Paradiso to the summit, where breathtaking panoramic views await you. From there, the route is downhill all the way. Wooded sections alternate with picturesque villages, char- ming «grotti» and magnificent lake and mountain views. At the end of the hike, a visit to a winery is on the agenda. While tasting excellent wines, you can enjoy the view all the way to Italy. Afterwards, a short descent leads down to Morcote.
Trip to Monte Brè Details: ca. 3 h ca. 8 km 169 m 784 m
Magnificent views of Lugano and the lake basin await as you take the funicular railway up Monte Brè today. Once at the summit, you’ll hike to the village of Brè and then continue along shady forest paths on the mountainside – these paths near the border were once used by smugglers, sneaking their con- traband into the country. You’ll eventually reach Gandria with its pretty alleys, steps, cypresses, and palm trees. Next, enjoy a boat trip across the lake to Cantine and the Swiss Customs Museum. From there, you’ll continue on foot to S. Rocco and take the boat back to Lugano.
