8-day Scharding to Vienna Self-guided Cycling Tour

On this tour you can expect a leisurely bike ride on which you can discover famous landmarks along the route and partly also some hidden secrets. You will start your tour in the baroque town of Schärding, where you will get to know the traditional inn “Zur Bums’n” on the first evening. Enjoy a “Halbe Bier“ (half a litre of beer) and try to find out what the name of this quaint inn means and how this name has a different background than many people might think…

You will cycle along the Danube cycle path through different landscapes until you reach the Danube metropolis of Vienna, where you should definitely visit the “Wurstelprater“, the famous amusement park. Along the way, you will be fascinated by unique nature, such as the Schlögen bend or the Wachau region. During your trip, you will also get the chance to indulge in the region’s culinary delights. Whether traditional dishes from the rural cuisine or sparkling wine and sweet and light cider from the Wachau region, everyone will find something that they like. Ride your bike “From the Tavern Bums’n to Vienna’s Prater” and feel the pure joy of life on our great anniversary tour….

  • Day 1

    Arrival in Schärding

“Baroque Town or Town of Three Rivers”

Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane.

  • Day 2

Schärding – approx. 40-55 km “Upper Danube Valley”

You will cycle along the river Inn to the three river city, Passau. Here, we recommend a short city tour or a visit to the cathedral, where you can listen to the largest church organ in the world (except Sundays and holidays). Then, you will continue your journey along the Danube via Obernzell to Engelhartszell (the only Trappist monastery in Austria, liquor tasting) and further through the nature reserve Donauleiten.

  • Day 3

Upper Danube valley - Linz approx. 50 km “Danube Bend”

Today, you will reach the Schlögen bend on its northern side. Here, Europe’s second largest river is forced by the granite of the Bohemian Massif into a unique 180° turn. You will have time to watch this natural phenomenon during a ferry ride to the other side of the river. Following the motto, “In Linz beginnt’s” (“It starts in Linz”) you can begin your city tour in one of the many restaurants in the historic old town.

  • Day 4

Linz – Grein/surroundings approx. 55 km “Through the Marchland”

On the fourth day you will take a little detour away from the course of the Danube to St. Florian (Augustinian monastery) and to Enns. In Enns you can go to the town square with its 60 metre town tower, the landmark of the oldest town in Austria, or you visit the archaeological collection in the municipal museum Lauriacum. Afterwards, you will return to the river, first reaching the beautiful little baroque town of Grein. Here you have the opportunity to visit the oldest municipal theatre in Austria that is still being used. Or you can visit the maritime museum or Greinburg castle.

  • Day 5

Grein/surroundings – Wachau approx. 50-60 km “Strudengau and Nibelungengau”

This section of the Danube, the Strudengau, was once feared by sailors, now you can cycle along it. Where they used to fight against the Danube currents you can now take a leisurely cycle ride. In Maria Taferl, high above the Danube, you will find the magnificent pilgrimage church, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

  • Day 6

    Wachau – Krems/Traismauer/Tulln approx. 40-60 km “Wachau”

You should make a little stop in Melk and look up or you will miss the beautiful Stift Melk monastery that overlooks the Danube. As soon as you leave the town you will get into the picturesque Wachau region, where you can enjoy the charming atmosphere of the region’s typical orchards and vineyards. You will pass through the little wine towns of Spitz and Weißenkirchen, cycle past the Dürnstein Castle ruin, and finish your journey in the 1000-year old town of Krems or in Tulln. A stay in the Wachau region means that you simply have to take part in a wine tasting, which we have organised for you.

  • Day 7

Krems/Traismauer/Tulln – Vienna approx. 45-65 km “Vienna Woods”

Your tour ends in the Danube metropolis of Vienna. Don’t forget to visit the “Wurstelprater”, the vibrant entertainment area of Vienna’s Prater and experience its positive mood. In the famous “Schweizerhaus” restaurant you can enjoy a piece of “Stelze” (knuckle of pork), gaining energy for further explorations of the city..

  • Day 8

    Departure or extension of trip

Weather warranty/Spring and autumn special: Tour bookings within season 1 can be re-booked free of charge up to 5 working days prior to arrival if the weather forecast announces bad weather
