Lech Cycle Path 7-Day Self-Guided Cycling Tour (Level 2)
Starting from the source of the Lech, in the middle of the Vorarlberg mountains, you will cycle between imposing peaks, past lush meadows and through the seemingly endless countryside. With the wild, unspoilt Lech as your constant companion, offering great photo opportunities, you will keep coming across small mountain villages. After Tyrol, you’ll reach Bavaria, where you leave the mountains behind, and the hilly foothills of the Alps begin. Famous royal castles sit enthroned in Füssen, whilst in Schongau, the historical old town is a delight. The river leads on, through the medieval town of Landsberg am Lech, to one of the oldest cities in Germany, Augsburg, with beautiful monuments from many eras.
Mainly on cycle paths or quiet side roads. Approximately 450 meters in altitude must be gained to get to Lake Formarinsee, after which it tends to be downhill to Füssen, with smaller inclines. It is slightly hilly between Füssen and Landsberg. It alternates between asphalted paths and longer sections on gravel paths.

Arrival in Lech am Arlberg
Enjoy your first hours in the breathtaking mountains and marvel at the surrounding peaks with a first small exploratory tour.
LECH AM ARLBERG – ELBIGENALP/SURROUNDINGS approx. 45 km
In the morning, you’ll pass the Formarinsee, the source of the Lech, where you can enjoy the fantastic views across the sparkling mountain lake. Through idyllic farmland and past lush mountain meadows, the route leads to the Walser village of Warth and further on, to the charming town of Steeg in Tirol. A detour to Holzgau rewards you with historical houses painted with wonderful Baroque facades known as ‘Lüftlmalerei’. The first cycle trip ends in the Lech valley's geographical centre, the stronghold of traditional woodwork and carving.
ELBIGENALP/SURROUNDINGS – FÜSSEN/SCHWANGAU approx. 55 km
It is worthwhile making a first short stop in Häselgehr, where the decorative exterior of the parish church is stunning. Past the Lechzopf to Forchach, where a suspension bridge lures the daring to cross! You will cycle across the border into Bavaria. The impressive Lechfall greets you in Füssen, with the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, which are well worth seeing.
FÜSSEN/SCHWANGAU – SCHONGAU approx. 40/55 km
As you leave the tranquil town of Füssen along the shimmering blue Forggensee, and ride through the Alpine foothills, a last quick glance behind you shows the mountains growing smaller. The Lechsee at Lechbruck is a good place for a short rest on the riverbank. In Schongau, you can explore the unique historical old town and while away the evening in a beer garden.
SCHONGAU – LANDSBERG AM LECH approx. 40 km
Schongau – formerly a Bavarian fortress – bears witness to the past, with walkable battlements up on the city walls. Epfach with the Roman museum and the baroque pilgrimage church in Vilgertshofen are good places to pause before you reach the medieval city centre of Landsberg. Nestled in the wild and romantic valley floor, the historical town hall and the Gothic town gate are the main attractions.
LANDSBERG AM LECH – AUGSBURG approx. 50 km
From Landsberg to Kaufering is 11km of the best-preserved section of the renowned Via Claudia. You’ll cycle past Königsbrunn and the old Bavarian ducal town of Friedberg to Augsburg. Many monuments of all eras define the cityscape. A visit to the Fuggerei is worthwhile – the world’s oldest continuing social housing project, a small city within the city.
