8 days Panoramic Cycling at Tauern-Cycle Path in one Hotel

Zell am See and the village Maishofen with its castles make ideal starting points for your daytrips.  On mostly flat bike paths, you can explore the region around Lake Zell and enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding, partly snow-covered peaks of the over 3,000 metres high Tauern Mountains. You will ride comfortably to unique natural wonders such as the Krimml waterfalls or the Seisenbergklamm gorge and to cultural highlights such as the new national park museum or the tourist mine in Leogang. Also the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner with its 3,798 metres, is worth a visit. The bus will take you up to 2,500 metres. Many castles are located on or above the road. Your hosts will take care of you after your cycling days and we also recommend mingling with the locals in order to experience firsthand what it means to live traditions on a daily basis

Highlights:

  • From Maishofen, explore the region with its impressive mountain panoramas
  • Dip your feet into Lake Zell and Lake Ritzen
  • Admire Europe's highest waterfalls in Krimml
  • Hike through the Seisenbergklamm gorge

Tour Character: Level 2

You will cycle on almost completely flat routes in the river valleys of the Salzach and Saalach rivers. Only when the bike path leaves the riverbank, the terrain gets slightly hilly. You will find yourself mostly on paved bike paths and quiet side streets. Only very short sections will be cycled on roads with more traffic.

Your Hotel:

The motto of the family Neumayer “preserve traditional values worth of protection and convince with the contemporary” is implemented in a very lovely way in every detail of their hotel. The family has been running, and above all living, the agricultural and touristic family business for eight generations. This is how they make you feel what it means to be “really a guest”. The castle, which was fully renovated, will take you back to ancient times and still you won’t miss any modern comfort. Only natural materials were used in the very stylish rooms. The family’s love for local products can also be found in the hotel kitchen. The hotel restaurant is widely known for its Pinzgau specialities for which products from the farm, the garden, the fields and woods are used. Even the bread is baked in their own wooden stove. The Badstub`n spa – with a rustic farmer’s sauna, stone bath, solarium, and infrared cabin – invites you to relax. Or you can refresh yourself in the large swimming pond in the garden of the castle.

  • Day 1

    Arrival in Maishofen

The personnel of the hotel will welcome you with special welcome drink.

  • Day 2

Around Lake Zell approx. 20 km

Today, you will cycle past Castle Prielau to the lakeshore. There, you will continue along the lakeshore to Zell am See with its beautiful old town centre (pedestrian zone, historic parish church) and further into the Schüttdorf moor. You will return along the other side of the lake with stunning views of the mountain city and the mountain Schmittenhöhe.

  • Day 3

Into the Oberpinzgau region, to Mittersill and Krimml approx. 40-75 km

You will take the Krimml train from Zell am See up into the Oberpinzgau region to the Krimml waterfalls (highest waterfall in Europe). On your way back you will cycle steadily downhill over the national park towns Hollerbach (herbal village), Stuhlfelden (Castle Liechtenau, Castle Habach) and Mittersill (national park museum, castle). The route can be interrupted and shortened by train at any time.

  • Day 4

    Active Recuperation

Option for a guided hiking tour (minimum of 4 participants) onto one of Maishofen’s mountains with a view. Alternatively, a short hiking tour (approx. 1 hour) onto the ‘Schwalbenwand’ to the alp ‘Kammer-Eck-Alm’ enjoying a traditional lunch there. Or a local circular bike tour (approx. 15 km) as part of the unique ‘Radgolf’ (bicycle golf) in Maishofen.

  • Day 5

To the Tourist Mine in Leogang or to Hochfilzen approx. 40-65 km

On the fourth day you will cycle through the small moor bath Neunbrünnen to the riverbanks of the Saalach River and further to the Leogang Ache. The mine will set you back to times long past. Here, the silver ore for the famous Salzburg silver coins was reduced. The richest mineral deposit in Salzburg holds 70 partly very rare kinds of minerals, which can be admired in the mineral cabinet. After your daytrip, you will return back to your hotel through lush meadows and on beautifully landscaped paths.

  • Day 6

Into the Glemm-Valley approx. 30-40 km

The newly opened and well-developed cycle path leads you gently uphill to the world-famous alpine ski resort of Saalbach and even further to Hinterglemm. You follow the still young Saalach river and marvel at the towering mountains to the right and left. How about a cable car ride (to be organized by your own) to the over 2000-metre-high Mount Schattberg with its breathtaking panorama

  • Day 7

To the Seisenbergklamm gorge in Weißbach approx. 50 km

Today you will cycle through a small rural hamlet, first to Maria Alm and then to Saalfelden. From there, you will continue along the river Saalach to Weißbach to the Seisenbergklamm gorge. In 1831, woodcutters constructed a 600 metres long way on which now visitors can explore the gorge. Later, you will cycle back to your hotel past Lake Ritzensee and through the Kolling woods.
