Scharding to Vienna leisurely Self-guided Cycling Tour

The blue waters of the Danube flow quietly and gently towards the Black Sea. Enclosed between steep wooden slopes and green meadows, the river blazes its way. Indulge yourself in this idyllic atmosphere on this leisurely bike trip from Scharding to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. On the short day trips, you will have even more time to enjoy the beauty of the nature, which you will find in the Danube valley. You can cycle on the beautiful bike paths along the river bank and marvel at the breathtaking Schlögen bend or the romantic landscape on both sides of the Danube. You can experience all that as thoroughly as you like; either from the bicycle saddle or during a nice break. During your breaks you will also get the chance to indulge in the culinary delights of the region. Whether traditional dishes from the rural cuisine or sparkling wine and sweet and light cider from the Wachau region, everyone will find something he or she likes. From its beginning to its end, this tour is pure pleasure and relaxation! This cycle tour is a true classic and is ideally suited as a first cycling holiday with the whole family.

  • Day 1

    Arrival in Scharding

    “Baroque Town or Town of Three Rivers”

    Stroll through the pretty little baroque town of Schärding and marvel at the famous Silberzeile lane

  • Day 2

    Scharding – Bend of the Danube/surroundings approx. 45 - 55km

    Today, you will cycle along the river Inn to the three river city, Passau and to where the river Inn joins the Danube. On the Danube cycle path you will cross the upper Danube valley and pass the town Engelhartszell with its impressive abbey church of the monastery Engelszell. Then, you will cycle via Niederranna and approach today’s destination, the ͞Schlögen bend͞. Here, the second largest river in Europe is forced by the granite of the Bohemian Massif into a unique 180° turn. You will have time to watch this natural phenomenon during a ferry ride to the other side of the river, where you will find your hotel.

  • Day 3

    Bend of the Danube/surroundings – Linz approx. 55 km

    You will ride your bike through the green area of the Eferdinger Becken (basin) via Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital Linz. Following the motto, ͞In Linz beginnt’s͟ (͞It starts in Linz͟) you can begin your city tour in one of the many restaurants in the historic old town. Further highlights of the European culture capital of 2009 are the magnificent views from the Pöstlingberg or a stroll along the Danube.

  • Day 4

    Linz –Wallsee/Ardagger approx. 40 - 50 km

    On the fourth day, you will take a little detour away from the course of the Danube to St. Florian (Augustinian monastery) and to Enns. In Enns you can go to the town square with its 60 metre town tower, the landmark of the oldest town in Austria or you can visit the archaeological collection in the municipal museum Lauriacum. Later you will continue your journey to today’s destination.

  • Day 5

    Wallsee/Ardagger – Marbach/Maria Taferl approx. 40 km

    Today, you will again cycle along the Danube and get to the beautiful baroque town, Grein. Here, you will have the opportunity to get an impression of the oldest still performing city theatre in Austria. Additionally, you can visit the maritime museum or the castle Greinburg. From today’s destination Maria Taferl, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the beautiful blue Danube!

  • Day 6

    Marbach/Maria Taferl – Wachau approx. 45–50 km

    In Melk, you should stop briefly and look up – otherwise you may miss the beauty of the abbey Melk, which towers above the Danube. As soon as you have left the city behind you, you will cycle into the landscape of the Wachau region, where you will be enchanted by the atmosphere of the typical fruit orchards and vineyards. Today, we will organise a wine tasting event for you – which is a must during a visit to the Wachau region

  • Day 7

    Day of Rest with Vineyard Tour

    On the seventh day, you can relax with a walk through the wine villages of Spitz, Weißenkirchen or Dürnstein. Get to know the beauty and hospitality of the Wachau, which have made this region so famous and enjoy every moment of the day.

  • Day 8

    Wachau – Tulln approx. 45 km

    Today, you will cycle past the 1,000-year-old city of Krems to the Roman town of Tulln. Here, you can once again enjoy the tranquility and culture (e.g. with a visit to the Egon Schiele museum) of the rural area before you will get to the Danube metropolis of Vienna.

  • Day 9

    Tulln – Vienna approx. 40 km

    The final kilometres of your bike tour will be a relaxed trip to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. As soon as you arrive, you can occupy your room and then enjoy all the amenities of the city for the rest of the day. Treat yourself to a Viennese-style Americano coffee and a piece of the famous Sachertorte cake in one of Vienna’s typical coffee houses. Take a stroll along Vienna’s Parade shopping street, along Mariahilfer Strasse, visit St Stephen’s Cathedral or see the main sights and take a trip in one of the famous Fiaker cabs.
