Explore Normandy 8-day Small Group Tour
Slow Tours’ adventure through this picturesque northern region of France will provide a glimpse of life in medieval times, and will track you through the Renaissance period, right up to the time of the impressionist artists. Great abbey churches such as the Mont St Michel, half-timbered manor houses, beautiful gardens and a coast that became an open-air studio for impressionist painters are just some of the highlights.
Impressive chateaux, peaceful forests, calm rivers and windswept cliffs offer a constantly contrasting landscape. Take a brisk walk, enjoy a boat ride or paddle a canoe down a river to see a different view of this stunning countryside.

Arrive at the train station at Vernon, a short direct line from Paris, for transfer to our accommodation with time to relax before our welcome dinner
Today, we visit Monet’s house and famous garden with its much-painted lily pond and bridge. Lunch in the village of Giverny and a stroll along the main lane to discover many art galleries, then we drive to La Roche Guyon and its chateau for an afternoon tour
After breakfast, we drive to Rouen old town for shopping, visiting the abbey and cathedral, and the square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Explore the ports and beaches at Honfleur and Deauville on the way to our hotel near Bayeux
After a relaxing breakfast, we take a short drive into Bayeux to see the famous tapestry, a record of William the Conqueror's victory in 1066. Just around the corner is the Bayeux cathedral, narrow streets with small boutiques, the old mill and gardens and many interesting buildings to discover. Your choice if you wish to stay with the group or take a map and discover on your own. We meet for lunch at a designated restaurant in the old part of town then go to the WWII museum and cemetery, where a film of the WWII Normandy landings will give you an overview of how events changed the outcome of the war. If time and weather permit, we will drive to the landing beach of Omaha
After breakfast, we drive to the very famous Mont St Michel for the day. A climb to the Abbey at the top is a must if you can manage it! This island has many shops, restaurants, inns and cafes, so after the climb and viewing around the island, we stop for lunch before making our way back to the hotel
This morning we find William the Conqueror’s chateau, partially restored, and then explore one of the most beautiful villages in Normandy where we can buy lunch from the local bakery. An afternoon of tastings of local produce - apple cider, calvados, camembert cheese and maybe even some Normandy ice cream and chocolate - will leave you with memories of this delightful region
Transfer to Bayeux train station or Rennes airport for departure or continue on to the Brittany tour
In September this year I took a Slow Tour to Brittany and Normandy with Carol while on 2 months long service leave. I am a 60 year old French teacher who usually travels solo and by train but it is too difficult to get to all the many little villages by train so I decided to take my first ever "group tour" - and I had the most wonderful time. There were just 4 of us on the tour, travelling around Brittany and Normandy in a lovely car, staying at only 2 hotels, experiencing some great dining experiences, visiting the must see places like Honfleur and Mont St Michel but also walking slowly through a little village consisting entirely of thatched houses. I thoroughly enjoyed the 10 days and would recommend this tour to anyone. Anne (Victoria) September 2013
