Munich to Merano 8-Day Self-Guided Cycling Tour (Level 2)
Cycling Across the Alps? With Eurobike, not only is it possible—it’s surprisingly easy. Start your adventure in Munich with a visit to a traditional beer garden, a stroll through the English Garden, and a glimpse of the Eisbach surfers. Then it’s off toward the south! Breathtaking views await at Lake Starnberg, and in Garmisch-Partenkirchen you can take in the Alpine panorama from the top of the Zugspitze. As you cross from Bavaria into Tyrol, the steep ascent to the Reschen Pass is made effortless with a convenient transfer. Celebrate your arrival in South Tyrol with a cappuccino and a view of the iconic church in Lake Reschen. From there, it’s a smooth descent through stunning mountain scenery, with sweeping views of König Ortler, before arriving in Merano to walk in the footsteps of Empress Sisi. And to top it all off? A well-earned Sprizz as you toast your unforgettable Alpine crossing.
You cycle on marvellous cycle paths and little side roads and only on very short sections on main roads. Nearly every day there are small ascents to be tackled. The Resia-pass will be bypassed via a bus transfer, then follows a descent of approx. 1200 metres in altitude to Merano. The route is mainly asphalted, a few longer sections also on well-maintained dirt roads.

Arrival in Munich
Bavaria’s state capital awaits its visitors with numerous sights (English Garden, town hall ‚Hofbräuhaus‘,…).
Munich – Murnau am Staffelsee approx. 65 km
From Munich, the tour starts with a bike ride through Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg. Then you will cycle on the lakeside road to Seeshaupt. You will continue on wonderful ways through rustic Bavarian towns, past the Lake Osterseen and Lake Riegsee to Murnau am Staffelsee.
Murnau – Garmisch-Partenkirchen approx. 40 km
First, you will cycle through the nature reserve called Murnauer Moos, the largest swamp area of Central Europe. Later, you will continue your tour through unspoiled nature following the River Loisach to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stage is intentionally brief. Therefore, there is still enough time for an individual trip with the Zugspitzbahn, a mountain railway. At an altitude of 2962 meters, you have a wonderful view of the Alps.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Mittenwald – Leutasch approx. 40 km
Today you proceed along the beautifully developed cycle path all the way to the river Isar. You cycle through the sunny high mountain valley with marvellous panoramic views onto the Karwendel- and Wettersteingebirge-mountains to Mittenwald. Here we highly recommend a break and to take a stroll throughh the village with its Lüftlmalerei-painted houses. You then continue in a spectacular fashion through the Leutaschtal to Austria. You cycle along the Leutasch-stream through the stunningly beautiful valley all the way into your day finish.
Leutasch – Imst approx. 50 km
Today you cycle over into the Inn-river valley. You leave Leutasch on a country road leading you on gently hilly terrain before an eight-kilometre long descent takes you to Telfs. You cycle on the former towpath along the river Inn and so reach Stams with its Baroque Cistercian monastery. Then via Haiming it is not far to Imst, the so-called „North Tyrolean Merano‘.
Imst – San Valentino approx. 40 km + bus transfer
Today, you will cycle along the river Inn, past the monastery Zams to Landeck. A bus will take you to Nauders from where you will cycle less than 100 metres in altitude uphill to the mountain pass Resia. From there, you will cycle downhill to Lake Resia and continue on minor roads to San Valentino.
San Valentino – Merano approx. 70 km
Your day starts with a trip to Glurns (perfectly preserved medieval city walls). Then, you will cycle via the Montani ruins, through Silandro, down to Merano. On your way, you will come across some pretty castles (mountaineer Reinhold Messner’s castle Juval) and you will get marvellous views of the impressive mountain massif Ortlermassiv and the mountain pass Stilfserjoch. Since 2004, the Venosta railway has been operating again between Malles and Merano. You can almost always take this train to travel a part of your journey.
Departure or extension
Now it would actually be nice to add a few more days ... It is also a great way to continue the tour all the way to Lake Garda.
