Today we drive into the hills behind the French Riviera to discover the village of Gourdon with stunning views to the Mediterranean. Time to explore the village shops before we lunch here then drive on to the world’s perfume capital, Grasse for the afternoon. We visit one of the perfumeries and take a walk into the old village where the cathedral, built in the 11th century, houses 3 Rubens paintings and 1 of Fragonard who was born in Grasse
After breakfast we drive to Cannes and take a short boat trip out to the largest of the Lerins islands, Ile St Marguerite. Here, in the 17th century, a Royal fort was constructed which became a prison during the 18th century. Among other famous prisoners, the Man in the Iron Mask was also imprisoned here
Today we depart from our accommodation and visit the hilltop town of St Paul de Vence, known for the many artists and famous stars who have lived here. After lunch we enjoy the beautiful coastal drive to our St Tropez hotel

I just had the most wonderful experience in the French Rivieria, even travelling across to Italy for a day. The villages were picturesque and the artist’s galleries outstanding. I particularly enjoyed seeing the home and gardens of Renoir, one of my favourite impressionist artists. A visit to the mansions on the peninsula of St Jean Cap Ferrat proved to be an unexpected highlight with a delicious lunch overlooking the stunning gardens as a memorable bonus. St, Raphael, St Tropez.... wow, what a great trip, and would not have been the same without the local knowledge and contacts of our tour guide, Carol. Carolyn (Glen Osmond) April 2010
